Funding for training of pharmacists

To support the career development and transformation of Pharmacists across England, HEE, in partnership with NHS England, a consortium of universities led by University of Chester has been commissioned to be some of the education providers to deliver up to 2,000 fully funded places on courses which deliver General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) accredited pharmacist independent prescribers across England, until 31 March 2019.
The NMP course is made up of a range of online and e-portal learning, self-directed learning with some face to face learning and assessments. This will provide more flexibility around learning and help you to plan learning around work and other commitments.
Who can access the PhIF funded NMP course?
To access Pharmacy Integration Fund (PhIF) funded places, learners must be pharmacists who are deployed as part of the following salary supported programmes:
- Clinical Pharmacists in General Practice Phase 2
- Pharmacy Integration for Care Homes
- Clinical Pharmacists in Integrated Urgent Care / NHS 111 Workforce Development Programme for Pharmacist
Non Salary Supported Programme Learners: NHS England and Health Education England are providing up to 200 IP training places across England as part of the Medicines Optimisation in Care Homes Programme for non-salary supported pharmacists working in a care home or a secure environment setting. This offer runs until 31st March 2019.

Other funding streams may also be available through your regional HEE if the following criteria is met:
- You are working in or providing an NHS services where NMP can be used as part of the service
- You have employer approval to use NMP as part of their service/practice
- You have appropriate and confirmed access to a prescribing budget and prescription pad, if needed
- You have a commitment to the appropriate number of hours of supervised practice from both the employer and the DMP.

How do I apply for the NMP course if I have a PhIF funded place?
- Select a university (view the list locations and course start dates below)
- Contact the university directly if you want more information, or complete an enquiry form.
- Complete the Application Form
- Get an email from your CPPE Supervisor confirming which programme you are enrolled on and that they support you to complete the IP course:“I confirm that ………….. is enrolled on the following programme (delete as appropriate): Clinical Pharmacists in General Practice Programme/Medicines Optimisation in Care Homes Programme/Pharmacists in Integrated Urgent Care Programme .I confirm that a training needs assessment has been completed and as their educational supervisor, I agree …………….. is in a position to enrol on training for Independent Prescribing as of the…………. (insert date from which learner may undertake IP)”
- Return the completed application form along with CPPE Supervisor statement using this link
